How does NU|Tutors select its tutors?

We accept applications only from current Northwestern undergraduate and graduate students. Our interview process is rigorous, and we accept fewer than 10% of applicants each year. While all our tutors have high GPAs and standardized test scores, we understand that not all strong students are great tutors. All prospective tutors must perform mock tutoring sessions with our team members to ensure they are not only knowledgable and experienced but personable, understanding, well-spoken, and patient.

How will NU|Tutors match my child with a tutor?

Once you submit our tutor request form, we use your responses to select a group of tutors who specialize in your requested subject(s). We then use a mutual matching process to identify the best fit based on the details you've provided. That is, we choose the tutor who will not only help your child academically, but also serve as a compatible mentor for your child. All we ask is you fill out the form linked above with as much detail as possible, and we'll take care of the rest!

How does NU|Tutors train its tutors?

All our tutors are trained in the foundations of tutoring: connecting with students, listening to their individual needs and goals, and constructing a unique learning plan to reach those goals. Our tutors are trained to take the hard road: they coach students through problems to build confidence and independence, never just doing the work for their students. When it comes to specific subject matter, that's where our tutors bring their own experiences to the table. Their academic backgrounds have given them incredible foundations, and their current class enrollments ensure their skills stay up to standard.


+ Scheduling lessons

How do I schedule my first lesson?

Once you fill out our tutor request form, you will be matched with a tutor, who will reach out to you via email to introduce themself and coordinate your first session. An account will also be created for you on TutorCruncher, our secure payment and scheduling platform, and you'll receive a link to log in and set a password. Once you and your tutor decide on an initial meeting time via email, your tutor will add the lesson to your TutorCruncher calendar, where you may view all upcoming lessons. In order for a lesson to take place, you must have a positive account balance in your TutorCruncher account, which you may obtain by purchasing a tutoring package (see below). Your account will not be charged until your tutor marks the lesson as Complete.

Do I have to commit to the same hours every week?

We offer great flexibility to all of our clients. If you would like to have more or longer sessions before an exam, for example, we're happy to accomodate you. All we ask is that you please let your tutor know as far in advance as possible. The more notice you give, the more flexible our tutors are able to be. In general, having a regular weekly schedule ensures more consistent progress and helps incorporate tutoring into your student's life.

How do I pay for tutoring?

You may pay for your lessons via credit card using our secure payment and scheduling platform, TutorCruncher. Your account will automatically be created when you fill out our tutor request form, and once you have been matched with a tutor, you will receive a link to sign in, set your password, and add your credit card information. From there, you may purchase a package to pay for one or more lessons upfront. You must purchase a package prior to your first lesson. What are the available package options?

How do I purchase a package?

To purchase a package, simply follow the instructions in the video below to add credit to your account equal to the price of the package you'd like to purchase (prices found here). From there, simply email your NU|Tutors point of contact to let them know you've purchased a package, and they will add the appropriate bonus credit to your account. Your point of contact is the team member who will reach out to you as soon as you submit our tutor request form or contact request form and will reamain in touch for questions and feedback for as long as you work with us.

Do packages expire?

No, credit purchased in a package never expires!
